I recently had the pleasure of attending Sudbury’s first ever Northern Ontario Microbrew Festival, organized by Stack Brewing . Held at The Grand, Sudbury’s infamous nightclub, this event featured some of Ontario’s best “up and coming” brews. Music and food were part of the good times, with education sessions, and a home brew competition to boot.
Beau’s, Highlander, Sleeping Giant, Lake of the Woods, Sawdust City, and Stack all brought their “A” game, while the Sault’s own Outspoken debuted their seasonal Pottswurth Maple Breakfast Stout. This one of a kind beer kept people coming back for more. Brewed with maple coffee from St. Joesph Island, its flavour lacks nothing except maybe for a side of bacon.
What did organizers think? Here’s what Rob Majury (sales and marketing manager) had to say:
“The Microbrew Festival was a busy, fun time. We (Stack Brewing) were ambitious with this project. We hosted a Homebrew Competition with the winning brew on site and presented ED sessions promoting beer education (not just intoxication). We worked alongside local charities and local businesses, and we celebrated northern Ontario craft beer. This event received a great turn out, great reception and will most definitely become an annual event for the North.”
What did I think?
The festival allowed for a much needed afternoon warm up that people of the north were more than happy to take part in. I got the feeling that the people of Sudbury and area were craving something like this to take place in their town. An event such as this allows for a different kind of beer experience, an experience of appreciation that many people haven’t been exposed to yet. The breweries that attended see the potential in expanding their craft, to share the products that they take so much pride in.
Overall it was an excellent event to be a part of. We’re very proud of our friends at Stack, keep up the hard work!
