In the summer of 2013, five guys with a love of rock & roll & reasonably priced beer gathered together in a basement to play music that they weren’t hearing in the local Sault Ste. Marie scene. Inspired by bands like The Gaslight Anthem, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, The Hold Steady, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers etc, Wayne Watkins (vocals, guitar), Mike Yakasovich (guitar, vocals), Greg Callaghan (guitar, vocals), Mike Smykacz (bass) and Clint Wilson (drums) set out to craft anthemic, melodic rock songs with a punk rock edge that hopefully wouldn’t send the audience stampeding out the doors for a smoke break, even if they don’t smoke. In the winter/spring of 2014, the band recorded their first four-song EP with Dustin Jones at Rising Tide Records, a process that has been described as “an awesome learning experience” by the band and “UGHHHH *takes swig from Jack Daniels bottle*” by Dustin. Now the results of those furtive basement experimentations have been bared for the entire world to see. With their ears. They are Northwest, and if you buy their EP, you’ll be the northbest.
