Long before the advent of anything recognizable as “media,” troubadours roamed the known world. Singing loudly and enthusiastically, playing violins, lutes, wood flutes and drums, they brought the good news and the bad news. They commented favorably on love and malt barley. They commented unfavorably on kings.

Although they never intended on being troubadours in the word’s purest sense, Ernie’s Coffee Shop was just that. In the not-even two years of their existence between 1988 and 1990, they hauled their instruments onstage and simply sang and played their hearts out because they loved doing so. They never had a “record” to support because they never actually set foot in a studio. And to this day, aside from a passel of board tapes, basement recordings and boombox dubs, one simply cannot find any recorded evidence of Ernie’s Coffee Shop.
